Add volunteer phone numbers

I tried to reply to my previous post of the same title, but it wouldn't let me since it was marked "already possible". I see that people can add phone numbers if they go into their profile page in the upper right corner. However, those phone numbers aren't visible when searching for their profile in the "people" tab. Only email addresses show up under their profile. I want the phone numbers to be visible to team members in case they need to text each other. Not everyone has the app.

Also, if you can add your phone number in your profile, but no one can see it, what's the point?
