We have been using black background with white lettering. We'd like to try something different for a background but do not want to recreate the entire lyrics slide set for a song. Can I simply insert a new slide background without recreating the slide set? If so how? Thank you!

When you create a Cue, it gives you the option to add a Background and a Foreground. By choosing a Media background, this is how you customize what goes behind the text. (Lyrics are a Foreground element since they sit on top of the background.)
You will likely need to create a new lyrics template or modify your existing lyrics template so that the lyrics show well against various types and colors of backgrounds.
